Commodifying Indigeneity? Settler Colonialism and Racial Capitalism in Fair Trade Farming in Palestine

Abstract The recent proliferation of settler colonial and Indigenous studies Palestine have addressed the historical present-day enclosure Palestinian land, yet question ‘indigeneity’ is underexamined in this literature. Claims to indigeneity straddle varied definitions: a racial category; as constructed through encounter or preceding colonialism; local relation an international juridico-political category. Using discourse analysis ethnography specific sustainable agriculture initiative, I show how for Palestinians, claiming brings into tension potential political economic gains, social relations struggle, discursive formations collective subjectivity. A valorisation commodification category narrows notions biological-cultural, offering challenges struggles sovereignty. conclude by asking what theorising from offers Marxist theories capitalism colonialism, whether can exceed its commodification.
